Chelsea are set to donate a portion of their Club World Cup winnings to Diogo Jota’s family in a heartwarming gesture.

Jota, 28, passed away in a road traffic accident alongside his brother Andre Silva when travelling just north of the Portuguese border early last month. His death rocked the footballing world.

And Chelsea, who lifted the Club World Cup after beating PSG last month, have now taken the decision to make a financial donation to the family of Jota. The Blues’ success stateside earned them an estimated £84.4million windfall.

Chelsea have allocated £11.4million to be distributed between the players who represented Enzo Maresca’s side during the tournament, according to The Athletic.

The players will receive around £368,000 each and an equal payment will be made to Jota’s family.

Liverpool are also set to make their own tribute to their former star during the new Premier League season – with the Reds getting the action underway against Bournemouth on Friday evening (15 August).

Players will wear a ‘Forever 20’ emblem on their shirts and stadium jackets for the duration of the season, while there is a fan mosaic and a minute’s silence planned for the clash against Bournemouth.

The Reds also announced last month they would retire the No.20 shirt in honour of the star and l recently unveiled plans for a memorial sculpture at Anfield as the focal point for a permanent tribute to Jota.
