If Chelsea should win Against Atalanta, here is what Garnacho must do: Maresca
There is a good chance of Alejandro Garnacho starting for Chelsea in their Champions League fixture against Atalanta on Tuesday.
This season, Garnacho has been Enzo Maresca’s preferred option on the left, with the 21-year-old playing there in the 0-0 draw with Bournemouth last weekend.
Garnacho had a very good chance that day, so it is a game that Chelsea could have won.
Ahead of their trip to the New Balance Arena, Maresca has been speaking about his summer signing.
Enzo Maresca thinks Alejandro Garnacho can give more to Chelsea
Overall, Maresca is pleased with how Garnacho is doing right now. At the same time, though, the Chelsea manager thinks that he can offer the team a bit more.
Speaking about the Argentina international in his pre-match press conference, Maresca told BBC Sport and the rest of the English media: “He wants to learn and is open-minded. He is working well on and off the ball. He can give much more but that is not only him. Overall he is doing well.”
Chelsea’s Champions League record in Italy (away group/league stage away games)
The Blues have won two games, drawn two and lost three 🇮🇹
AC Milan 0-2 Chelsea (2022/23)
Juventus 1-0 Chelsea (2021/22)
Roma 3-0 Chelsea (2017/18)
Juventus 3-0 Chelsea (2012/13)
Lazio 0-4 Chelsea (2003/04)
Lazio 0-0 Chelsea (1999/00)
AC Milan 1-1 Chelsea (1999/00)
After drawing with Bournemouth and losing to Leeds United, Garnacho and Chelsea will be desperate for a win against Atalanta.
The Blues were not terrible in their draw with the Cherries, but they were very poor in the defeat at Elland Road.
However, Maresca was impressed with Garnacho, claiming that he was one of the team’s best players on the night.
Where Alejandro Garnacho can improve at Chelsea
Maresca’s overall assessment is a very fair one. Garnacho has looked very bright on the left wing at times, but there is certainly room for improvement.
In the current Premier League campaign, the former Manchester United winger has only scored one goal. Chelsea fans would like to see him do better there.
Supporters will also want to see Garnacho beating his man more often and being more positive. Right now, he is only averaging 0.8 dribbles per game, according to WhoScored.
It is easy to forget how young Garnacho is, though. With time and the right coaching, which he is getting from Maresca, he has the talent and potential to become a quality attacker.
